John Covell

Grandpa Put-Putt 1936-2007

He was born October 20, 1936, in Adrian, Michigan and has lived in Michigan most of his life. His dad owned and operated a motorcycle repair shop in Adrian and was also a flat track motorcycle racer.

John's first motorcycle was 1948, 125cc Harley Davidson. (John was 13) and his dad introduced him to the "delight of solo operation" of a motorcycle.

John competed in local motorcyle cross country, mud runs, poker runs, and field trials with some measure of success and lots of fun.

Over the years John raced a variety of competitions: stock cars, sprint cars, super modified and late models, small hydroplane boats and his most active endeavor was road racing motorcycles.

He became interested in quads in 1989 with the purchase of an automatic 125cc with a lawn mower attachment. He found that boon-diggin' was more fun than mowing lawn.

Somebody informed him that they raced quads at Milan City on Friday nights. We checked it out and within three months, John was on that TT track riding BOGGER (Boogie on Grandpa, Grandama Enjoys Racing).

Becuase of his past experience in competition, he has developed a keen awareness for safety rules and regulations and, above all, saftey equipment. He wears full coverage safety gear including a neck roll and has encouraged others to be very safety conscious.

We have spent many enjoyable Saturday nights and weekends at Deerfield Speedway participating in a truly family oriented sport.

Over the past, John has raced dirt T.T. motorcross, scrambles, ice, indoor and outdoor rinks, and Grand Prix asphalt competitions.

Grandpa will be greatly missed in the coming races but he will always be present in our hearts.
